Approach
Training is dependent on the situation. I work with most tools, including e-collars and prongs, when they are the right fit. The tool does not build a better dog. The right person behind the tool builds a better dog.
Scent detection is used to build confidence and is woven throughout training. It gives dogs a clear, rewarding job and supports focus and engagement in other work.
On leash handling
Leash handling is important under emergencies throughout training. It is a safety skill. It should not become an excuse to become lazy with handling your dog.
Relying on the leash as a permanent solution limits the dog. The ultimate goal is an off-lead life: dogs living their best life through liberation. The leash is a tool for safety and communication during training, not a substitute for the work of building a reliable dog.
